Master's / PhD level
If you are an international Master's/PhD student, you’ll have to get two documents before moving. The first is the Quebec Certificate of Acceptance (CAQ), which you can (and should) apply to once you get your acceptance letter from the university. Once your CAQ is approved, you can apply to the Study Permit.
Check the government's websire with more information here.
The application for the CAQ is online and might take 4 weeks to process (maybe more, due to COVID). We recommend you start the process as soon as you receive your letter of acceptance.
Required documents:
Your passport
Letter of admission from the university
Amount of tuition fees (make sure you calculate the right amount for international students).
A valid credit card
Other documents might be required, such as proof of financial capacity, depending on your country of residence.
More information about the CAQ and the online application itself can be found here.
Once you have your CAQ, you can apply for a Study Permit. US Citizens can obtain the study permit at the border, citizens of other countries need to do this in advance.
Processing of the study permit takes between 1 week and several months (apply as soon as possible!!!). You can look up processing times here.
Required documents:
Proof of acceptance (i.e. letter of acceptance form the university)
Proof of identity (i.e. your passport)
Proof of financial support (this can be a variety of documents, including your letter of acceptance with detailed information about funding or a letter from Krista)
CAQ (the digital letter you get is enough)
Other documents might be required depending on your country of residence and whether anyone is traveling with you.
NOTE: Your study permit will only be good until the date that your passport expires! So you may want to renew your passport before getting/renewing your visa to make your life a bit easier.
More information about the study permit, fees, processing time, and the online application itself can be found here.
If you have applied to renew your permit, but it hasn’t been granted by the time your previous one expires:
You can stay in Canada with implied status
Contact the ISO and send them your new CAQ and proof of application to renew
Do this before the DNE date, otherwise you will be automatically unenrolled, may not be able to receive your funding, etc.
