Visas for significant others

Partners of people on a study visa or a foreign work visa can get an open work permit (if you are married or if you live together/have lived together in the past). The process can be done as part of your study permit application before moving here, but it can also be done once you arrive in Canada.
If you decide to apply for your partner's open work permit as part of your own application, some documents (e.g. passport) will be required from each person, while other documents (e.g. certain forms to fill out, marriage certificate or common-law partnership) will be required once, as a couple.
If you are married, you will need to provide your marriage certificate.
If you are not married, the common-law partnership has to be notarized at a Service Quebec service center and then go through the steps of applying for a work permit for the significant other.
