Running an HPP study
HPP Study Checklist 30 mins before appointment until appointment start time:
Turn things on
Turn on Zimbabwe
Turn on Washington
Unlock playroom, turn on lights, open door blinds
Plug iPod into “Infant Room” jack and press “Play” on the iPod (or set it to play a playlist if not already on the correct screen)
Go to HPP room and turn on lights to 3rd dot from the bottom (it’s the little horizontal switch below the dimmer, not the big flicky switch)
In the HPP room, use the remote control to turn on the big TV screen—point the remote at the TV, and press the “On” button with a firm, long press, one time. Wait for 5-10 full seconds for the screen to respond—when it turns on, you will see “HDMI” appear on the upper left hand side.
In the HPP room, check the headphones to make sure the music is playing and that the volume is okay. You can adjust the volume using the knob on the wall—follow the headphone cord until it gets to the wall and you will see the grey volume knob
In the HPP room, unplug the cord that says “power” from the video camera and attach the cord that says “computer” into the same hole
Check that the parent is still coming
Check if there are any voicemails from the parent to say they are running late or cancelling—if there are, the phone receiver will be flashing red. To check messages, pick up the receiver, press the button beneath where it says “Msgs” on the screen, and follow the instructions. The password is taped to the phone on a pink background.
Check if there are any emails from the parent by logging into the infant email account (if you don’t know what it is, text the lab manager).
Get paperwork in order
Gather three clipboards from beneath the round window (one for you, one for the parent, and one for the volunteer)
Gather physical copies of the consent form and the LEQ/LEAPQ, the parking pass, and any other paper-based questionnaires you need for your study. These are found in the top filing cabinet drawer beneath the printer. Clip the consent form to its own clipboard and have a pen handy. Clip the LEQ to another clipboard. Clip the parking pass to the third clipboard, and fill out the date and time (give a lot of leeway with the time).
Log into Filemaker Pro Advanced 18 on a computer that has it, and log into the Infant Database (if you don’t know the login, text the lab manager). Click on the grey button “coming in today” and scroll through any records that appear to find your participant, using the <> arrows in the upper left-hand side of the window. Click on the baby’s name, and then click on the grey button above the “Children” box to go to their specific record. A new window will pop up. If the appointment was not entered into Filemaker and you get an error when you click on “coming in today”, instead, click the drop-down beside “Layouts” on the top left and choose “Babies”, then click “Find”, then enter the baby ID for the child coming in, then click “Perform Find”. In that window, click the “HPP” button at the top. Then, click on “Preview” and then print the page. Make sure your printing dialog specifies to print ONLY the current record, not all records being browsed!
On a post-it, write the parent’s and child’s names, and add this to the volunteer’s clipboard with the parking pass, then give this to the volunteer to have when greeting the parent.
Set up HPP
On Zimbabwe, open Habit2 (the icon with a cartoon parent and baby). Click once on your study from the list so it turns blue, then click the green running man icon to run the study. Add your participant information and choose your study settings (order, etc.).
On Washington, open OBS Studio (the black circular icon that looks like a film reel). Make sure you see black rectangles for all 4 screens. If a screen is missing, follow the troubleshooting guide below.
On Zimbabwe, open “screen saver settings” (type in “screen saver” into the task bar and open the control panel), then click “preview”, making sure you don’t move the mouse at all after you click. Bubbles should start appearing on all 4 monitor screens, for the baby to look at later while you are focusing the camera.
On Washington, go to the computer desktop and open the Word document called “ParticipantIDforVideo”. Scroll to find your study (or copy and paste one of the other ones to add yours if it’s not there) and enter your participant information, overriding the previous Study ID and Baby ID. This will be the title screen for the video recording, so we can see from the first still image which participant each video is of. In OBS, on the lower left-hand side, under the “Scenes” heading, click on “ParticipantIDrecording” and the view should change to the Word document. If you can’t see all your participant information, go to the Word document and scroll until all the information is visible in OBS (see screenshot below for how this should look).
Appointment start:
When you are ready to start the HPP portion of the study, bring the parent and child to the HPP room, and have the parent sit in the chair with the child seated on their lap. Explain that you will just spend a minute focusing the video. Kneel down beside the camcorder, and temporarily remove the “computer” power cord so that you can see the video image on the display screen. Adjust the camcorder until the baby is centred in the frame. If the child is not in focus, touch the screen once, wait a second, and menu items should appear. Touch the one that says “AF” for autofocus. Then touch the “AF” that does not have a lock icon to unlock the focus, and let the camera focus on the child’s face. Once they are in focus, touch the “AF” with the lock icon on it to lock the focus. Now reattach the “computer” cable and hide the camcorder display behind the Velcro curtains.
Explain once again to the parent not to interfere with their child’s reactions except to keep them seated and oriented toward the centre screen, then give them darkened sunglasses and headphones with music. Tell them if they want to stop the study at any time, they can raise their hand and we will be able to see to come get them.
Exit the room, pulling the door shut firmly behind you and hurry back to Zimbabwe/Washington to start the study
Make sure to press “Start Recording” in OBS on Washington before starting the study!!! This is found on the bottom right-hand side. Record the “PartcipantIDVideo” scene for a couple seconds, and then click to switch the view to “HPP video recording”, making sure you see all the screens with the bubbles and the child on the parent’s lap before starting the study.
On Zimbabwe, in Habit2, click “Run” to start the study. Check specific study settings, but in general, press spacebar to indicate when child is looking at central screen/attention getter, 4 on the number pad when child is looking to the left (child’s right) and 6 on the number pad when child is looking to the right (child’s left).
