Thesis supervisors
If you are applying to a research-based program, you will probably complete and defend a thesis to graduate. For this, you will need a supervisor. It is common for programs to ask you to have a supervisor in order to be accepted.
Before contacting potential supervisors, go through their research interests and what their current students are working on to make sure that they match your interests. You'll be working with them for a few years, might as well enjoy what you are doing!
It's a good idea to contact potential supervisors before applying (around August) and include them in your application. Ask them if they will be taking new grad students, if they will take clinical/research students, and if they might be interested in taking you in, based on your interests.
