Participant Criteria
Participant Criteria: For each study in the lab participants are chosen based on certain criteria: typically age and language background
o Age criteria: In order to be eligible for the study, the participant must fall within the age range of the given study. A study’s age range is the age in months of interest +/- 7 days. For example for a study with 14 month olds you could test participants between the ages of 13 months and 23 days (7 days younger than 14 months) to 15 months and 7 days (7 days older than 14 months). This is the lab default age criteria but other studies may have more flexible age ranges, if this is the case specify this in the Studies Document and in the Current Testing Plan document.
o Language criteria: Each study is interested in different language groups (e.g., bilinguals, monolinguals), or may use a continuous approach to bilingualism. For studies that use a group approach, these are the lab standards for each language group but certain studies may have specific language exposure guidelines that do differ:
o Monolinguals: e.g. 90% exposure to L1 (this L1 should be English or French in order to understand our stimuli) and ≤ 10% exposure to L2
· Example:
o Good: 90% English + 7% French + 3% Spanish
o Bad: 85% English + 15% French (not enough L1, too much L2)
§ French/English Bilinguals: ≥ 25% to English and French and ≤ 10% exposure to L3 (or else could be considered trilingual)
· Example:
o Good: 75% English + 25% French; 40% English + 50% French + 10% Spanish
o Bad: 75% English + 15% French + 15% Spanish (not enough exposure to L2 and too much to L3); 85% English + 15% French (not enough exposure to L2)
§ Bilingual-Others: ≥ 25% to English or French and ≥ 25% to a language other than English or French ≤ 10% to L3
· Good: 25% English + 75% Spanish; 70% English + 25% Arabic + 5% French
· Bad: 75% English + 15% French (too much L3) + 15% Spanish (not enough L2); 85% Spanish + 15% French (not enough exposure to L2)
